What is a hand in the equestrian world?

A hand in the equestrian world equals four inches. When measuring a horse, you measure it from the ground to the whither; the highest point of a horse's shoulders.
When you measure a hand, you are measuring the width of your hand - four inches is the average width of a human hand.
The blue arrow shows how high you measure a horse in hands.
