Some will teach you,

Horse Pics on a Calender: My Choice

So, I looked around a little and picked out twelve pics of horses which I thought were really beautiful and could be in calenders (in my opinion). Enjoy!

American Pharoah

On June 6th, 2015, American Pharoah became the twelfth Triple Crown winner. He was the first horse to win it in 37 years since Affirmed won the 1978 Triple Crown*. The only race American Pharoah has ever lost was his debut.

Born in: Zayat Stables
Birth date: February 2, 2012
Coat color: Bay
Markings: a faint star
Height: 16.1 hands
Weight: - unkown -
Personality: American Pharoah is known for having a calm and sweet personality.
Earnings: $4,168,800

So, you might be wondering: why is "pharaoh" spelled wrong? Here's the story: Zayat's son ran a contest on social media for the naming of the horse, and a 62 year old lady suggested the name. She says that she checked the spelling before submitting it, and Zayat's son says that he copy and pasted the name and sent it to the Jockey Club. The Jockey Club approved it exactly how it was submitted...so no one really knows how American Pharoah's name came to be spelled with the A and O reversed in "pharaoh".

Fun fact: When he young, Pharoah's tail was chewed off by another yearling, so his tail is shorter than others. This started the Twitter hashtag #HailTheTail.

*For those of you who don't know, the Triple Crown is made up of three races: the Kentucky Derby (1.25 miles), the Preakness Stakes (approx. 1.18 miles), and the Belmont Stakes (1.5 miles).

Amazing Ears

A horse's ears can tell and do MANY things. Here are some of them!

Emotions

1. Ears forward and pricked = happy and interested.

2. Ears laid back against head = unhappy, angry, or annoyed.

3. Ears lowered = relaxed, bored, or feeling sick

4. Flicking ears = listening

Facts

1. You can tell if a horse is cold by feeling behind their ears. If that area is cold, then so is the horse.
2. Horses have 16 muscles in their ears!
3. Due to Fact #2, they can rotate their ears 180 degrees.

Equine Clones

11 years ago on August 6th, Prometea - a cloned Halflinger foal - was born. She was the first successfully cloned horse, and the horse became the 7th animal to have been cloned.

Foal of Haflinger Horse like Prometea*

Prometea facts:

-weighed 36 kg at birth
-weighed 100 kg at 2 months
-Dr. Cesare Galli and others experimented at a lab with 841 reconstructed embryos - of the 14 applicable embryos, four were implanted into the delegate mothers. Only Prometea succeeded in being born.
-was born in Italy
-Prometea in the feminine form of Prometheus
-She is still alive today, but Italian scientists keep people from viewing this horse.

*this Halflinger foal is not Prometea

Real Horse Height

So, horses are measured in hands (don't know what I mean? Go here: What is a hand in the equestrian world?). But to get the OFFICIAL height of a horse, what do you have to do? You actually have to take off their shoes.
